I must confess that I don't remember what the settings were under El Capitan but I would hope they hadn't been changed but you can't take that for granted. I suspect it is the Power Nap setting that did it. That seems to have changed the temperature issue back to how it was before upgrading to High Sierra (ie it was quite cool when I picked it up after leaving it with the lid closed). Looking at the energy saver set up in system preferences, I finally decided to disable the wifi and Power Nap boxes under Power Adaptor as I tend to leave the MBP connected to the power when I am not using it. After being completely boggled on the internet trying to understand sleep/hibernation/standby I gave up on that side of things. I still believe that iStat Menus used sufficient resources to make a noticeable difference to the temperatures but other factors seem to be at play.ĭespite switching off iStat, I still had the MBP warm in the morning after supposedly being "sleeping". I have been active on my MBP even if not on the forum. I am not inclined to pay for something that I have to completely hamstring to prevent it doing this. Has anyone else noticed this and if so are there any suggestions as to how it should be used to avoid the issue. Switching it off gave an immediate cooling down of the laptop and changing the global setting from medium to slow update frequency also gave a noticeable temperature decrease. Further investigation clearly showed it was iStat Menus. At first I thought it was High Sierra as I have only just upgraded but it then occurred to me that it could be iStat Menus. I close the lid and expect it to go to sleep. I was very surprised this morning to find that my MBP was warm as if it had been active overnight. It works OK and I was happy with the summary on the menu bar. Looking at reviews iStat Menus seemed quite good. I tried XRG and didn't think too much of it. I looked at Activity monitor which is just too much info. Main reason I am trying it is that I want a replacement for the discontinued widget iStat Pro just so that from time to time I can look at aspects of the machines performance. As a standalone application, iStat Menus 5 is available directly from Bjango here for $16.I have just downloaded and installed iStat Menus as a 14 day trial. If you already own iStat Menus 3 or 4, the upgrade price is $9.99. I can’t say I’m really shocked at how good it looks but it continues to impress me the more I use it. iStat Menus 5 will not be leaving my menu bar. There’s a plethora of new additions to the app in terms of monitoring including per app disk activity, support for compressed memory and per app upload statistics. Overall iStat Menus 5 is a worthy upgrade if you own previous versions of the app. There’s an option to have all monitors displayed in a compbined dropdown as well if you really like going minimal on your menu bar items. The iStat app lets you configure the look and feel and has a continuous animation telling you how to move menu bar items around. I love how this resembles a machine turning on. On launching the app, all switches that were toggled on automatically go from off to on and get a nice tick on them. There are so many small things in the interface that I love. I use Bartender and found myself throwing most non iStat menu bar items out of my menu bar after properly configuring iStat Menus 5 to my liking. Some dropdown items also have toggles so you can now turn wifi off from within the iStat network dropdown. I obviously went with the dark mode and it looks so good that I now have almost everything toggled on just to quickly glance at what’s happening inside the Mac. The dropdown windows for various iStat items can be dark or light. Yosemite’s dark menu bar mode is fully supported with the ability to customize interface elements to your liking. The update adds a whole lot of new features and tweaks. I’m running it on Mavericks on a 2011 MacBook Air and the menu bar items from iStat make the menu bar look like I’m on Yosemite. Everything from the toggle switches to the graphs and colours just fit perfectly together. Today iStat Menus 5 releases and it takes monitoring your Mac to a whole other level. iStat Menus has been around for a long time. Skala Preview is a fantastic app for designers working on iOS and Android. Apps like Pixelmator and Briefs don’t go flat but still look modern and great. Heck even Apple showed off a lovely dark look for the menu bar in Yosemite. Many apps released for OS X use the standard light look and interface colours instead of going for a more modern look. If you’ve read my Mac app reviews, you know how much I love dark interfaces.
